29 face 2/16 - 6

These 2 Gelli prints are both made from a total of 29 faces - all of which are faces I cut out from magazines. You can't really see some of the faces anymore, but they are there! In addition to the 2 prints, I also made a time lapse video of the process (I kept track of the number of faces by adding pencil marks to the back of the prints as I was going along.)

... and because I can make up my own rules, #14 is the video of making the above 2 pieces!

I know I'm pretty much not making it by the end of the month at this point, but that's ok! I started late, I still have some things in progress, some closer than others to being done and I've already posted 14 groups of 29 faces! I will keep on going!

29 Faces 2/16 - 5

test face on the fridge! YES!
This group of faces took a bit of time. A few years ago I found a set of paint-your-own plaster magnet backed eyeballs after Halloween at Michael's for something like 10 cents. I painted them a while ago and then they remained on my fridge, staring back at you. Then a couple weeks ago I was standing at the bus stop and noticed this red O kid's magnet on the ground. I considered picking it up, but the bus arrived and that was that. The next day I was at the bus stop again and the magnet was still there. 29 faces was floating in my head and I realized the eyes and this red O were a perfect match:

So off I went, walking around outside, looking for well lit, ferrous metal surfaces or flat surfaces I could prop the face components on. As soon as I found my first surface I knew this was going to be a fun project! I shot all these photos on 3 different walks. I love how using the same exact eyes and mouth, common things are morphed into entire characters. Amazing what some temporary magnets can do!

Sunset Flower Glow

Just a quick photo from Amir's Garden this past weekend from my digital camera. I also shot a roll with a camera I made with a build-your-own camera kit I got from Christmas that I'm looking forward to!

a demented family portrait: (2 people x ~16 flashes during exposure) - 3 flashes for 1 person during beginning = approximately 29 faces in 1 photo

interference pattern from ads/bus graphics on the bus windows made for extra darkness and a face like pattern to me... you might not see 29 depending on how you define your faces

this just didn't work as I wanted... I let it stop me for way too long hoping I would figure out what I wanted to do to make it better, but I eventually realized I just needed to stop and cut my losses and continue on. I always have some crappy faces in this project! The point is to not let those slow everything down! There's many more faces to continue!

I have some more sets in progress that I'm excited about, some are just taking a little bit longer than others, which is ok!

Amir's Garden Instantly

Off a fire road on a short but steep hike in Griffith Park, there's a little oddly lush garden filled with non-native plants. Amir's Garden was started in 1971 & this garden has been volunteer run ever since it was created. A central open area on a ridgetop is surrounded by all sorts of lush and sometimes colorful plants and all encircled by pathways and little spots with benches. We spent 2 hours wandering around (granted, I stopped to take many photos...) and we didn't even explore all the paths.... I suspect it was a semi-normal day that included kids being crazy, teenagers shooting some sort of film, many others wandering around and talking on their phones, people enjoying the benches and resting, random drumming and other random things going on. What an interesting and unique place to spend some time walking around and watch lizards and birds!

double exposure that was a little too much....

29 face 2/16 - 3

I really enjoy looking through other people's 29 faces since there's so many variations that come out of the same prompt! This one was inspired by alarmcatstudio's line drawings, but instead I made 29 faces from a single line! This was a sharpie on bristol paper

I intended on doing something different for this one initially, but I like where it ended up! These were basic watercolor splotches (faces). Later I added hair, some slight facial features and eyes and then decided to sketch more definition on the hair and faces with a black copic brush tip. My paper's too big for my scanner!

Lesson: 1)Profiles are much harder than you think (I had google images for profiles up, but didn't really copy  anything/look while painting. I had to modify my brain definition/hand definition as I went along to make them more realistic/less cartoony 2) The right paintbrush helps. I went with something too large at first which made it difficult to get the details I wanted & then I wasn't liking the lack of smoothness on the tips of the paintbrushes and started trimming. Watercolor can be hard to tame, but a bad brush doesn't help.

That's 203 faces already! (not counting some in progress things!)
