Huntington Gardens - Instants

Huntington Gardens is just located a few miles from my work and as a result, a few of my coworkers have passes (which include a free visitor!) A couple days ago one of my coworkers asked if I'd like to visit the gardens during lunch and shoot some photos! YES please! So a small group of us went and took a long lunch on Friday and explored the gardens for a little while. Although we only hit a couple gardens, it was so nice to be out in nature, walking around, seeing all sorts of beautiful plants and colors, talk with people & and relaxing for a while. I came prepared with a few cameras, once again including my Fuji Instax Neo Classic! I was really happy with the photos, although the midday sun was a little bit of a challenge at times.

Forest Lawn Glendale, Instants

The Glendale Forest Lawn Cemetery is well known in Los Angeles because of the numerous celebrities buried there and some of the more extreme, extravagant accommodations. Personally though, I enjoy visiting cemeteries for their art, bits of history and general calmness compared to many other places. We ended up visiting a little late, so we didn't have much time to site see and we didn't go into any of the actual buildings, but we did stop to see some of the sculptures out in the open. For being such a huge place (you can tell the land was purchased a LONG time ago with the views and massive amount of contiguous space), it's a very "flat" cemetery with few 3-d headstones, sculptures and other monument types things. I'm assuming it's due to policy and the hillsides, but we made the most of it and explored. I mostly shot with my instax neo-classic and my yashica mat with various expired films.... instax up now!

29 Faces 2/16 - 7

Obviously, I'm a little (little?) behind on the 29 faces for February, but I'm still going to try to finish. We'll see...at minimum I would like to do some of the things I have lined up/partially finished. These 2 collages are each made from 29 pieces of 29 different faces. It's been a while since I've done collage and I was reminded by these of why I like collage and how surreal and weird things can get pretty quickly. These took a bit longer than I had hoped, but to get what I want, sometimes it takes some scouting and creativity and I messed up one of them by trying a different adhesive that wasn't as compatible with the collage pieces as I had hoped. Fortunately, to me this 29 faces project is about experimenting and trying things out, which means things don't always work. With these 2 I'm over half way there!

CicLAvia 3/6/16: Growth

A quick photo from one of my rolls of film from the Yashica Mat at CicLAvia in the NE SFV last weekend! I'm really excited about how some of my photos turned out! Of course with that comes a bunch of scanning...

Instant Pink Trumpets!

I've been working in Pasadena for a while and after walking and biking around a bit, I've picked up on the fact that they seem to like to line the streets with a single kind of tree which gives the trees more impact, especially as they go through different phases throughout the year. Del Mar has the purple Jacarandas (probably soon?), Green street has the giant, wonderfully shady Ficus trees (serious the best street ever in the summer!!!!), Colorado has the Palm trees and Ginko in some areas and then getting past Lake, there's a large patch of the Pink Trumpet trees, which are in bloom right now!

I walked around a little today during lunch and took a few photos with my Instax Fuji Neo-Classic....I know I've said it before, but I still love this camera so much more than the Instax Mini 8. I also noticed that places like Michael's are carrying the Neo-Classic now!

CicLAvia NE SFV 3/6/16

Some more photos from the North East Valley CicLAvia on March 6 2016. We walked along the Northern most 2 miles of the route where there's many murals. This section of Van Nuys is also part of the Great Streets Program. I'm not sure if it was a change in perspective or reality, but this CicLAvia seemed to skew more towards non-bicycle transportation more than some of the other events.

it's worth reading this article about Levi Ponce (lots of responsibility in building mural community in this area of Pacoima!)

this bench was on wheels... not sure how often it appears/disappears from the street

The bench on the left featured a solar panel with USB ports in the front. I also spotted a bus stop in this area with USB ports (also, I love the woman on the bench in this photo)

so many dogs, as always!

this guy in the wheel chair was happily yelling "Si se Puede!!!" A building across the street had it on a sign...

this little boy pointed out this as the second ghost bike on the route... all I can say is I hope we can learn and do better in the future & that things like CicLAvia on this street are signs of larger change..

I was amusing myself by trying to spot the different animal sculptures/real animals in people's front yards in the neighborhood!

CicLAvia perfection!

the guy on the left seemed to be vlogging and was super excited to be sharing CicLAvia. Haven't found this guy, but I found another guy's video that's pretty good!

Lady of the Valley looking over her people

thank you CicLAvia volunteers!!!

until the next CicLAvia......
